Today I have the opportunity to share a message about Jesus being our closest friend, as I got my notes organized it felt so fitting to share with you as well. Proverbs 18:24 “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Life can bring a lot of good friends but also a lot of unreliable friends as well. Jesus is our friend that sticks closer than a brother through all things.
Growing up I grew up in a single parent home at 8 years old I began to bounce around from one family member to the other. We didn’t grow up going to church except for the occasional Sunday with my grandmother. I remember Jesus always sounded like a fairy tale to me. I had a lot going on in my life at this time so I chose to believe in this fairytale and at 9 years old Jesus became my closest friend. Today we are going to talk about how he can become the same for you.
Have ever had an unreliable friend? Or maybe you were an unreliable friend? I like to think of myself as a pretty reliable person but that wasn’t always the case. When I was young I had a neighbor who we would play with. Like kids do we would go back and forth to each other’s house, playing and all the things. One day I asked my friend if she wanted to play hide and seek. Of course who doesn’t love that game so she starts counting and while she’s counting I run inside my house and watch from the window as she was looking for me. Talk about an unreliable friend.
What is so interesting about this verse is it says “the one who HAS an unreliable friend soon comes to ruin.” it’s not the unreliable friend that’s in trouble but it’s the guy that has him as a friend. A lot of us have more unreliable friends than we think. Unreliable friends can look like
the pressure that we put on ourselves to dress a certain way, act a certain way, achieve a certain status. Comparison of the girl sitting next to us, the amount of people they Snapchat or followers they have, boys may compare the playing time you get at a game, the invites you get to the parties.
The next part of this verse shares the hope of finding a “friend that sticks closer than a brother.”I am the oldest of 9 and it doesn’t matter what my siblings do or what they need but if they ask for anything I will fight for them to get it because I love them and they are my sisters. This is the same way Jesus feels about you, you are in his family, he is your brother and he wants to be your closest friend. As we close there are 3 ways to make Jesus your closest friend.
The first is to spend time with him. Friends don’t become friends without spending time together, so spend time with Jesus Matthew 9:10 “ While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.” We are the sinners Jesus chose to spend time with.I advise the first 15, you can do it anywhere 5 minutes in the word, 5 minutes in prayer 5 minutes in worship
The second is to talk with him. Talking with God is just a life of prayer and vice versa. Jeremiah 29:12 “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me and I will answer you.” Sometimes it can feel like talking to God is like talking to thin air, I use this verse all the time to remind myself that when I talk to God he is answering and that’s not just for me but for you too, let that stir your faith
The third way to make Jesus your closest friend is to invite him in. One of my favorite things about God is how kind he is to let us choose him. You can’t have a friend without inviting them into your life and God is waiting for you to invite home before he moves. Matthew 7:7 “ask and it will be given, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open.” God is going to say yes to every invitation you have but you have to let him in and receive all that he is first.
You have always been the prize in God’s heart, his goal for all eternity is to have you right beside him because he loves you. So I encourage you to spend time with him, talk to him, and invite him in as He becomes your closest friend
